Munich, 14 May 2025 – Technology standards are the backbone of today’s digital economy – from the smartphone in your pocket to the connected car you drive.
The patent system plays a key role in the development of these standards by encouraging investment in Research and Development, as well as the exchange of technical knowledge.
In a new study, the European Patent Office (EPO) presents fresh data on the relationship between Standards and Patents, drawing on a new database compiled from its unique prior-art records originating from Standards Development Organisations (SDOs). The study also provides insights into disputes related to Standard-Essential Patents (SEPs) and the role of the Unified Patent Court.
