“Series of educational workshops by HIPA on the topic: ‘The contribution of patents as a bibliographic source (patent literature) of technological information.'”

Continuous upgrading of the skills of researchers is a critical factor for enhancing research and innovation activities in Greece.

It has been noted that there is a lack of familiarity with bibliographic searches of patents, which are a complementary and reliable source of information for modern research and technological development. Researchers should be able to relate the topic of their work to the information contained in patents, not only to that found in traditional scientific literature. Many recent scientific discoveries can only be found in patents or patent applications.

However, teaching about patents presents significant challenges. Patents are a rich source of information, but they require more effort to learn and interpret than academic journals.

Purpose of the Educational Workshops:

The organization of a specialized educational workshop aimed at teaching how to acquire knowledge from patents seeks to fill the above gap by providing targeted instruction that will enhance technological information skills from non-conventional bibliographic sources.

Objective of the Educational Workshops:

  • To train researchers in the use of patent literature as a primary source of technological information, enhancing their information literacy and research skills.
  • To help participants recognize the importance of patents as a primary source for the publication of scientific achievements.
  • To provide practical tools for searching and extracting scientific and technological information from patent sources.

Target Audience:

The workshops are aimed at students of all levels (undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral), along with the academic supervisors of their research, as well as the broader research community in the country.

The first educational workshop will be held in collaboration with the Technology Transfer Office of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the Central Library of NTUA – Multimedia Auditorium. It will be targeted at prospective doctoral and postdoctoral candidates from NTUA and the institute of communication and computer systems (ICCS).
